Complete Candidate Assessment

Hiring Managers and Search committees typically begin screening and assessing candidates by reviewing and discussing formal qualifications, reputation in a field, and the seniority of the applicant's current and past positions. Although these criteria are essential, equally vital to a candidate’s success are the distinct leadership qualities, administrative skills, or interpersonal competencies that each leadership position calls for. When hiring managers fail to consider these "informal" qualifications they place the success of the new hire at risk.

NLG provides coaching and training to institutional search leaders and committees based on a deep assessment of the environment in which a new hire will operate, and the qualities that will be called for in order to be effective. We provide a framework and tools that help leaders and committees to go beyond formal review, to evaluate the administrative, interpersonal, and emotional competencies that will be "pulled" for in the position, and the considerations relating to "fit" that will be most salient.

Transition CoachingMany searches fail gradually, well after the search is concluded, in ways that could have been avoided. Failure can happen because new leaders:

  • Lack insight or experience with respect to some aspect of their new department or institution;

  • Encounter administrative challenges that were downplayed during the recruiting process or which have emerged during it;

  • Do not receive candid feedback from new colleagues and reports;

  • Fail to adjust their previously successful style to their new environment and challenges

NLG offers coaching services to help new leaders get better information, set priorities, nurture important (and sometimes challenging) relationships, and broaden their thinking around new challenges.

Through careful consultation with key stakeholders, we help leaders to better understand the challenges and opportunities that exist, the way that they are being perceived, and possible adjustments in approach that may be beneficial. We also draw on our experience across a variety of institutions and with a wide range of leaders, in order to provide ideas and options with respect to difficult issues a new leader faces.
